MEET THE TURTLES OF THE GILI ISLANDS
The Gili Matra Marine Recreational Reserve is famous for its incredible community of both Green Sea Turtles (endangered) and Hawksbill Sea Turtles (critically endangered). People come from all over the world to enjoy encountering these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.
Our research team use a method called photographic identification as a none invasive method of identifying our turtles. We do this to gain a greater understanding of behavioral patterns and movement as well as to monitor health and populations. With a program called i3s we identify individuals using photographs of each side of their face as well as their shell. Did you know that the side of their face is like a fingerprint and unique to each turtle? This is how we can identify new individuals.
Name your Own Turtle!
The beautiful thing about this method is that everyone can get involved. If you are on holiday in the Gili islands and manage to get some pictures of turtles while diving or snorkeling please send them to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will run your picture through our database and check if it is an individual that we already know or if it is a new one.
When you send us your pictures we also need a little information about that individual, such as if they as what sex they are and what species they are; you can learn how to identify this along with some guidelines for how to behave with turtles here.
If you send a picture of a new individual you don’t only contribute to important research but you also have the honor of naming your own turtle.
